Visual concept for composition Requiem for the Dead

Spring 2021

This was a third-year university stage design project after reading the play Requiem for the Dead by Charles Mee. I was tasked to develop a projection design that would suit the text, themes and ideas and act as a set for a hypothetical stage performance. My design was inspired by the directing style influenced by Yayoi Kusama’s artwork.

PRELIMINARY SKETCHES

  • Cue 1 - Abstract ameba patterns

  • Cue 2 - Ancient ruins with piles of rubble in the distance

  • Cue 3 -Cloud sky looped

  • Cue 4 -Emerges from left side and slowly moves to the middle

  • Cue 5 - Abstract background with orb of light strongest at the centre and fading out

  • Cue 6 -Small sense of movement with a few blades of grass/ flowers slowly swaying in the wind

  • Cue 7 -Similar ameba pattern to pre-show but more dynamic

  • Cue 8 -Drone style footage of mountains

  • Cue 9 -Dark cloud looped with lightning

  • Cue 10 - Dark sea with stars (image has a cold/distant feeling)

  • Cue 11 - Almost completely black image with slight texture and darkness variations throughout

Concept design based on Requiem for the Dead
